What is vegetable tanning?

Vegetable tanning is a traditional artisanal process that has been passed on from generation to generation for more than 200 years, using both ancient recipes and last technologies.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The transformation of raw leathers even material that lasts over time is a process that only occurs slowly in wooden drums, while respecting the environment. It is an incredible process, based on the use of natural tannins, technologies and modern machines, but above all, the slow passing of time.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Among the various tanning methods, the vegetable is the most classic, traditional and recognized; the only one that can give leather its unique characteristics; the most natural and the most environmentally friendly.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     The  vegetable tanning , is the contact areas were stained and over time when the rotting process began these areas initially damaged were completely unharmed except for decomposition.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    With the arrival of the industry, tanning began with vegetable tannins and later the tanning appeared using chemicals, specifically chromium.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               To carry out vannins are extracted from different trees and arbustros, but mainly from acacia, oak, chestnut and quebracho. Tannins are organic substances that react with collagen proteins, that is, tannins bind to the collagen molecules of animal skins joining together, providing great resistance to the skin.                                                                     In this process of vegetable tanning, the skins acquire greater resistance to heat, in addition rot is avoided, so they become much more stable to the attack of microorganisms and microbes.                                                                                                                         During the tanning process the skins are introduced into wooden barrels where they come into contact with an aqueous solution rich in natural tannins. The skins remain in these barrels for three weeks, saturating the tannins to the maximum, then they are extracted from said container and the drying process begins.

Drying must be done naturally, that is, no heat is applied. The skins are arranged extended so that the air circulates naturally between them getting dried. The next step is to divide and reduce totally dry skin. At this point, the skins are like blank canvases where any type of color can be applied by applying different dyes to achieve the desired results or shades.    Finally, the skins are treated with vegetable oils and beeswax that give them shine and hydration, and to finish with the conditioning of the skins, these are extended and allowed to dry again to get the fixation of these substances. At this time the skins are fully tanned and conditioned to be used.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Advantages and disadvantages of vegetable tanning and chromiun?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  One of the main reasons is the time that the tanning lasts, that is, the period of time that the skin remains in its processing. The time used in chrome and vegetable tanning is practically the same, the difference is established in the tanning time for leather soles, which in the case of vegetable tanning is 60 days.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          With regard to the environment, vegetable tanning is much more sustainable and does not pose a health risk, while in the case of chromium, residues and marinades are obtained from the skin that can be very harmful due to its chromium  content .                                            In summary, comment that chromium tanning is used much more industrially than vegetable tanning because it is a faster, cheaper and more economical raw material process.
